President's Message

Since the last time I wrote this column, we have made some good progress in a number of directions that will benefit ASPRS members in the Rocky Mountain Region.

The first milestone has been reached with our web site development. We now have our very own Internet Service Provider, Web Developer and Web Master. However, if you check out www.asprs-rmr.org right now, you will notice that we still have a ways to go. There are a few kinks in there to be straightened out. We need lots more content and many links, images, etc. still need to be fixed. Despite the under construction appearance, we do have a brand new, refreshing design, and much of the organization behind-the-scenes is in place for a well-maintained, informative, and interesting web resource for our members.

Another major development concerning our region is our bid to host the 2004 ASPRS Annual Convention in Denver. The ASPRS-RMR board submitted a pre-proposal to host this convention at the annual ASPRS convention in Washington D.C. in May, in order to show an interest in bidding. In August, the final proposal was submitted to headquarters. By the time you read this, the ASPRS national conference committee and executive committee will have made a decision whether to hold this conference in Denver or elsewhere. We will make a formal announcement to all members in our next newsletter.

This brings me to my next topic. If our region is awarded the 2004 convention we then need to create a possible second regional committee to work exclusively on the planning and preparation for this big event. We are also currently seeking volunteers to serve on next year's ASPRS-RMR board. There is a position open that we need to fill immediately. This is titled "Regional Director - GIS in the Rockies". The responsibilities for this job include serving on the 2001 and 2002 "GIS in the Rockies" steering committee. We will need a further four board positions filled in January. If you are interested in serving in any of these roles, please contact me. Some of the benefits to you, which are often overlooked, include networking with fellow members of your profession, volunteering your time to make the society better serve our profession, and having a say on the future direction of the society at large. So I encourage you all to give volunteering with ASPRS serious consideration. We welcome all the participation we can get.

For all the mapping, remote sensing, and GIS companies or government agencies out there, we are looking to you to provide any level of support (financial or otherwise) to our anticipated ASPRS annual convention in 2004. It will take the full four years to plan this conference so an early commitment will be required. Again, please contact me directly on this.

Finally, we are still planning both technical tours of sites and facilities of interest as well as a couple of social events before the end the year. We will keep you posted on these events by e-mail and on our web site. The biggest event of the year for our region is coming up on September 25-27, GIS in the Rockies 2000. This will be the biggest and best ever with well over 500 attendees expected. We look forward to seeing you all then at the ASPRS booth in the exhibit hall. See http://www.GISintheRockies.org for further details.

Again, I would like to hear any comments, complaints, or queries that you may have on anything that concerns our local ASPRS region in 2000 and look forward to assisting you in any way I can. Thanks for your loyal support of ASPRS.

Support Available for Student Chapter Meetings

Last year the Board of Directors decided that the Region ought to do more to support its Student Chapters throughout the Region: this means you folks in Wyoming, Montana, and New Mexico, too! The region will pay for pizza and soft drinks to be served at meetings of Student Chapters. Last year we supported the chapter at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, where they have quarterly meetings with presentations by both student researchers and outside speakers. If your Student Chapter is doing something along these lines, we want to make it a little easier on your budget, so just contact one of your Board members for more information.
